Description
This is a post WW I document for a decoration that was awarded specifically to members of 1. Oberrheinisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr 97. The regiment was raised in 1881. It was garrisoned at Saarburg and assigned to the XXI. Armeekorps. The very decorative document measures 18” x 12.” It was awarded to Leutnant der Reserve Arthur Ibach. Oak leaves appear on three of its sides, which feature bandeaux for the many battles in which the regiment fought. A quick glance reveals many familiar conflicts: the First Battle of the Somme, 1918’s Second Battle of the Somme, the Battle of Masuren, and many other battles in the East and West. Its lower right corner displays the official unit stamp and an oberstleutnant’s signature. The document has been rolled up for many years, creating about a four-to-five-inch tear on the left side. We have placed tape over the tear to prevent further damage. Another tear of about one to two inches appears on the other side.
