Description
Death cards were an important remembrance to families whose sons fell in Germany’s defense during WW I. Frequently, the actual remains were never returned home for burial, so this was something tangible by which families could memorialize their fallen sons, brothers, and husbands. This card is dedicated to Johann Bernhard Koch. He was born 21 June 1883 at St. Georgen. He died on 5 June 1918 in a hospital. He was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class and the Baden Silver Service Medal. A prayer for Johann is seen. Two religious images offered comfort to his family.
