Description
Death cards were an important remembrance to families whose sons fell in Germany’s defense during WW I. Frequently, the actual remains were never returned home for burial, so this was something tangible by which families could memorialize their fallen sons, brothers, and husbands. This is a double-death card with photographs of two who fell during the Great War. Franz Albert Maier was born in St. Georgen on 15 October 1884, and fell on 23 December 1915. His older brother, Adolf Anton Maier, was born on 17 June 1880 and died in a hospital on 6 May 1918. In addition to their black bordered photos, a poem appears on the reverse. Jesus is shown welcoming the dying soldier to heaven as he is supported by angels.
