Description
This is a very early pickelhaube’s cruciform and spike from the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The piece dates from the 1860’s, and was used by an enlisted man/NCO serving in that state’s Grenadier-Regiment Nr 89 or Infanterie-Regiment Nr 90. It is made of brass. The base is rather vaulted, which is indicative of earlier pickelhauben. Four holes are in the base to attach it to the helmet’s leather body. The spike, which is firmly attached to the base and does not screw on/off like later spikes, is quite an unusual shape. It is fluted, being larger at the bottom and narrowing as it goes higher. It has a small ball at the very tip.
This piece is in amazing condition, especially considering that it is more than one-hundred-fifty years-old.
