Nordhausen is a city in the Thuringia region of Central Germany. It was an important industrial area during both WW I and WW II. It suffered heavy bombing damage due to its wealth of arms and munitions plants during WW II. It was initially occupied by the U.S. Army after the bombing, but its location in the Eastern zone caused it to come under the Soviet Union’s administration until East and West Germany were reunited in the late 20th Century.
Today we are offering a high-quality bisque-porcelain table medal manufactured by noted firm porcelain manufacturer Meissen. [The firm, located in the city of Meissen, is near Dresden. The firm was established in 1710, making it one of the oldest porcelain manufacturing firms in Europe, and Germany’s oldest. It originally belonged to the King of Saxony. It remains in existence today, after surviving WW II and years of Soviet rule]. The table medal commemorates the 1,000th-year Anniversary of Nordhausen’s founding in the year 927. Meissen produced the table medal in 1927 to commemorate the anniversary. The chocolate-brown table medal measures 1 ” in diameter. Its obverse depicts a crowned king holding a sword and shield, flanked by the dates 927 and 1927. Meissen’s world-famous crossed swords hallmark also appears on the obverse.
The table medal’s reverse features a shield with an eagle and further mention of the 1,000th Anniversary. The table medal comes in its original Coat-of-Arms embellished purchase packet, which measures ” x 2 ½” x 2 ½,” and again mentions the anniversary. A recessed area within the packet firmly houses the table medal.
Both the table medal and the purchase packet are in mint condition.
