TABLE MEDAL – COMMEMORATING KURFÜRST JOACHIM II AND KÖNIG FRIEDRICH WILHELM III – CASED
It is a large table medal that commemorates two important leaders in Prussia’s history over a span of three-hundred-years. The first is Kurfürst Joachim II (1505-1571), who was a member of the House of Hohenzollern. Joachim II was the Prince-elector of the Margraviate of Brandenburg. 1539 was a key year in his life for both political and religious reasons. It marked the future of the House of Hohenzollern as Lutheran rather than Roman Catholic (extending as far as Kaiser Wilhelm II).
The other man commemorated here is König Friedrich Wilhelm III (1770-1840). He was the grandson of Prussia’s first great King, Frederick the Great. He was extremely important to Prussia as he led his country through the difficult times of the Napoleonic Wars in the early part of 19th century. He lived until 1840 and saw the beginnings of what would become the modern Prussia and ultimately Germany. His son was Wilhelm I who would succeed his brother Friedrich Wilhelm IV and would become Germany’s first Kaiser in 1871.
This bronze-toned table medal measures 1 ¾” in diameter.
It is housed in a presentation case which measures ½” x 2″ x 2.”
