Description
This is a postcard of the Battleship S. M. S. Wörth. She was one of the four ships of the Brandenburg Klasse. She was commissioned in 1893. Along with her sister ships, she was the first true battleship that Germany possessed. At the time she was a part of Battleship Squadron Nr 1. She was named for the famous August 1870 battle of the Franco-Prussia War. The S. M. S. Wörth was sent to China in 1900 and participated in the 1900/1901 Boxer Rebellion. Since she was outdated, she was retired from service but was returned to active duty during WW I’s early years. After 1915 she was used as a floating barracks, then was scrapped in 1919. The postcard shows her steaming at sea, with some basic information about her listed at the postcard’s bottom. It was never mailed.
