Description
This postcard shows Princess Marie Auguste (1898-1983) of Anhalt, the wife of Prinz Joachim (1890-1920), Kaiser Wilhelm II’s youngest son. She is holding the son, Prinz Karl Franz Joseph, she bore Joachim before their divorce and his suicide in 1920. The little prince looks adorable in his frilly baby’s dress. The postcard’s reverse has two newspaper clippings attached to it. One shows Joachim with his young son, who is either three or four-years-old. Its caption reads “Letzte Aufnahme des Prinzen Joachim von Preußen, der sich das Leben nahm, mit seinem Sohne” (Last photo of Prince Joachim of Prussia, who took his own life, with his son). The second clipping is a head shot of Marie Auguste, with the caption “Prinzessin Joachim von Preußen hat sich unlängst mit dem Ritterguts-besitzer Bienert verheiratet” (Princess Joachim of Prussia has recently married the noble estate owner Bienert). [We have been unable to translate Bienert]. Someone has written the year “1925” on this clipping, as well as identifying her as “witwe” (widow) and something else we cannot decipher.
