Description
This is a postcard of the S. M. S. Odin, a Küstenpanzerschiff that was intended for coastal defense and patrol. She was the last ship type built by the German Navy before they shifted to producing true battleships. She was commissioned in 1896 as part of the Siegfried Coastal Defense Ship Class. She performed this same task through the end of WW I, then was sold for non military uses. She was scrapped in the 1930’s. The postcard features a most interesting study of what battleships looked like before the big naval buildup under Admiral von Tirpitz and Kaiser Wilhelm II. It was never mailed.
