This postcard shows Prinzessin Alexandra Viktoria (1887-1957), Prinz August Wilhelm’s (1887-1949) wife. Alexandra was a great favorite of her mother-in-law’s, (especially since the Kaiserin was also her aunt). The couple’s Potsdam residence developed into a meeting place for artists and scholars. During the First World War, August Wilhelm was made the district administrator of the Ruppin district. His personal adjutant Hans Georg von Mackensen, a close friend since his youth, played an important role in his life. His rumored homosexual tendencies contributed to his marriage’s failure. He and Alexandra Viktoria did not undertake a formal divorce at that time, however, due to Kaiser Wilhelm II’s opposition. After the war’s end, the couple separated, then formally divorced in March 1920. August Wilhelm was awarded custody of their son. [August Wilhelm joined the Nazi party in 1930 and was a high official in the SA. He was known as the “Brown Prince”]. Seen with the princess is her son, Prinz Alexander Ferdinand (1912-1985). Her signature is reproduced on the postcard’s bottom. The reverse sports a reproduction of her written support for the Red Cross.
