Description
Alfred von Tirpitz (1849-1830) was one of only six Germans granted Großadmiral status. He served as Secretary of State of the Imperial German Navy from 1897 through 1916. He was the architect of the modernized German Navy. Von Tirpitz tried to challenge the English Fleet’s superiority with two major expansions. When it became clear this was NOT succeeding, he expanded the U-Boot Fleet. Von Tirpitz supported unrestricted submarine warfare. Ultimately, Kaiser Wilhelm II became unhappy with von Tirpitz and dismissed him. The postcard comes from a charcoal sketch. His name and rank are listed below the image. The postcard was not mailed.
