PRUSSIA – DESK PIECE – HUSSAR PIPEHEAD

$225.00

This is an interesting desk piece that has been constructed from a section of a veteran hussar’s pipe. Its maker joined part of the ceramic pipehead with some of the dark brown wooden pipe sections, then crafted it so it would stand up. He also added a brass horseshoe to one of the upper wooden sections for decoration. The block of wood just below the horseshoe is set at an angle, and each surface has something engraved upon it. This includes “4 Esc. Leib=,” “1906,” “G. Hus.=Reg.,” “Potsdam,” “WS” “1903.” The white ceramic pipehead features a hand painted portrait of Hussar in his attila, with a pelisse slung over his shoulder and his busby atop his head. The portrait is surrounded by high-relief oak leaves painted in two shades of green, along with brown acorns tipped in gold enamel. The reverse of the pipehead displays a phrase mentioning the remembrance of the soldier’s service. Below the pipehead is another section of the pipe-fitting that attaches to the piece’s base. The entire piece’s height is 13 1/4.” The base is 2 3/4″ x 1 5/8″ x 1 3/8.” The base has evidently come apart a bit in the past. Some glue marks show on its bottom, and where the pipefitting joins the base.
