Description
This is a Duchy of Braunschweig veterans’ medal commemorating Infanterie-Regiment Nr 92’s 100th Anniversary of participation in the Peninsula Campaign. Infanterie-Regiment Nr 92 was founded in 1809 and garrisoned at Braunschweig, where it was attached to the X. Armeekorps. It served under British Field Marshal Wellington’s command during the first Napoleonic War, along with other Hanoverian regiments.
The medal is gilt-toned and measures 1 5/16″ in diameter. Its obverse depicts Braunschweig’s Herzog Friedrich Wilhelm (a.k.a. “The Black Duke”). [Friedrich Wilhelm led his Husaren-Regiment Nr 17 cavalry at the Battle of Waterloo, where he was killed at the action’s forefront]. The medal’s reverse features the regiment ‘s totenkopf, along with the word “Peninsula” and the dates 1809-1909. [PLEASE NOTE: Infanterie-Regiment Nr 92 bore the same “Peninsula” bandeau and totenkopf on their pickelhauben’s wappen. An original red, blue, and yellow ribbon is attached. The decoration is in very fine condition, overall.
