This is the Prussian Army’s Rang und Quartier-Liste for the year 1885. This volume is what evolved into the better-known “Rangliste.” Whatever the name, it was the annual volume listing all Prussian Army officers. An index in the back of the volume allows one to locate a particular officer and the regiment to which he was assigned. Also listed are any decorations that the officer received. The book did NOT include regiments from Württemberg, Saxony, Bavaria, and Braunschweig. It also only extended to Infanterie-Regiment Nr 132, as it predates the 1890’s major military expansion. Performing a bit of quick research, on page 23 we find a young hauptmann serving on Berlin’s General Staff. His name is Mackensen. (He had not yet been knighted by his Kaiser). Naturally, our young man is the future Generalfeldmarschall August von Mackensen. The listing shows that he was awarded the 1870 Iron Cross 2nd Class (while serving with 2. Leib-Husaren-Regiment Nr 2) and his assignment with the General Staff had him working within the XVII. ArmeeKorps. The book measures 8 1/4″ x 5 1/4″ x 2″ and weighs 2 pound 4 ounces. It has red binding, with a gold-embossed Hohenzollern Eagle gracing the front cover and an 1870 Iron Cross on the back. While complete, the binding is a bit loose. [SALES ON ALL RANGLISTEN ARE FINAL.
