Description
This is a really attractive photo frame that would have been used to honor a Bavarian soldier. The frame measures 6″ x 7 ½ .” It is most likely made of zinc. The frame area features twin unfurled banners of Bavaria. The checkerboard area, which would have been blue and white, is in place with a crown over each banner. In the center at the top of the frame is a large cutout Wittelsbach Crown. At the very bottom of the frame is what appears to be a soldier’s pack with a pair of crossed rifles. Nestled between some leaves is a tschako in profile, complete with field badge. While only half of the tschako is actually showing, if you look closely enough you can see one of the two lions that would have appeared on a Bavarian headpiece. Jäger Bataillone, Machine Gun Abteilungs, Eisenbahn-Bataillone, Telegraphen-Bataillone, Kraftfahr Bataillone, Luftschiffer Bataillone, and Flieger-Bataillone all used the tschako. So this frame could have been used to display a photo by any soldier in one of these units, or his loved ones back home. There is a place to slip in a CDV from the reverse. There is an easel-like prop on the reverse to securely hold up the frame. This would make an interesting display item.
