BRAUNSCHWEIG – GOBLET – INFANTERIE-REGIMENT NR 92 OR HUSAREN-REGIMENT 17 – 10CM TALL
The Duchy of Braunschweig’s Infanterie-Regiment Nr 92 and Husaren-Regiment 17 were two of the Imperial German Army’s most legendary units. Their soldiers displayed Totenköpfe (Deaths-Heads) on their headdresses from the Napoleonic times forward. [They also sported menacing black uniforms well into the 1880’s, before transitioning to dunkel-blau (dark-blue) then WW I’s Feldgrau (field-grey) uniforms]. Naturally, members of both regiments wanted to display the Totenköpfe on their personal items as well, such as this marvelous goblet. Since the goblet does not sport a bandeau, it could belong to either Infanterie-Regiment Nr 92 or Husaren-Regiment 17.
This Braunschweig Infanterie-Regiment Nr 92 or Husaren-Regiment 17 Goblet stands 4” (10 cm) tall, which is much larger than the small Totenkopf-decorated schnapps cups we have offered in the past. Its high-relief Totenkopf is quite bold. It does NOT display a battle campaign bandeau. It measures 3” in diameter at its rim and 1.75” in diameter at its base. Its bottom features a hallmark for “Wilkens,” a very fine German manufacturer. I believe that this cup is made of “German Silver” (nickel).
