COLOR POSTCARD – KRONPRINZ GEORG – SAXONY

$20.00

This color postcard shows Kronprinz Georg (1893-1943) of Saxony. He became Kronprinz when his father, Friedrich August III, ascended to Saxony’s throne in 1904. Friedrich August III served as Saxony’s final King until 1918, when he abdicated along with all of Germany’s royalty. Georg renounced his claim to the House of Wettin when he became a Jesuit priest. When the Nazis came to power, Georg was anti Nazi and spoke out against them. He also assisted in smuggling Jews from Germany. He drowned in 1943. Although no overt evidence was found at the time, it is strongly believed the Gestapo and/or SS was behind his death. Kronprinz Georg is wearing a general’s uniform, as well as a visor cap, the 1914 Iron Cross 2nd Class, and a Breast Star. Saxony’s Coat-of-Arms, his name and title appear on the card’s obverse. This was mailed as a Feldpostkarte in 1915.
