$15.00

This is a color postcard featuring Prinzregent Luitpold of Bavaria (1821-1912). Luitpold assumed the position of Bavaria’s regent in 1886, when Ludwig II (1846-1886) was deposed, then died mysteriously the next day. Otto, Ludwig II’s brother (1848-1916), was named King, but judged insane and incapable of carrying out a King’s duties. Otto remained in his semiofficial role until 1913. He finally died in 1916. Luitpold served as Prinzregent from 1886 until his death in 1912. Luitpold was very popular in Bavaria. The postcard shows him in 1911 at the age of ninety, the year before he died. He is in uniform, wearing a collar, medal bar, and breast stars. The postcard was mailed in 1900 and bears a Bavarian postage stamp.
