Description
This color postcard depicts the Netherlands’ Queen Wilhelmina (1880 – 1962). She married Hendrik, Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1901. She was a symbol of Dutch strength and heroism throughout her reign, which included both World Wars. She abdicated in favor of her daughter Juliana in September 1948, after reigning almost 58 years. This postcard shows the young queen’s portrait within an oval, and a framed sketch of a Dutch castle or official building. Its caption is in Dutch “Ter Herinnering aan de Troonbestijging onzer geeerbiedigte Koningin 31. August 1898,” which roughly translates to “In Remembrance of the accession to the throne of our honored or revered Queen 31. August 1898.”
