This is a colorized postcard of the battleship S. M. S. Kaiser Friedrich III. Friedrich III (1831-1888) was Germany’s second Kaiser. He was Kaiser Wilhelm I’s son and Kaiser Wilhelm II’s father. He was a very effective military commander in the 1865 Danish War, the 1866 war against Austria and her German allies, and the 1870/1871 Franco-Prussian War. Friedrich III served as Kaiser for only ninety-nine days and die at the age of fifty-six from cancer of the larynx. His son named a battleship for Kaiser Friedrich III. She was commissioned in 1898, but by the time WW I began she was totally out-of-date. She only was used for harbor defense and as a floating barracks. The postcard has some information, including a pencilled signature. It never was mailed.
