Description
This is a colorized postcard depicting Generalfeldmarschall Herzog Albrecht von Württemberg (1865-1939). Herzog Albrecht was a very capable military commander. Unlike many royals who served as an à la Suite officer, he was a legitimate military commander. He commanded forces at many of the battles on the Western Front including Ardennes, Marne, Yser, etc. He was awarded the Orden Pour le Mérite in August 1915, and was promoted from Generaloberst to Generalfeldmarschall in August 1916. He commanded Armee-Gruppe Albrecht with great distinction. He was third-in-line for Württemberg’s throne. His father died in 1917. Albrecht was the heir-apparent after König Wilhelm II of Württemberg, who was his cousin. Wilhelm II died in 1921, and Albrecht became the head of Württemberg’s royal house. In this pose Albrecht is seen wearing an Iron Cross 1st Class, and the ribbon of the Iron Cross 2nd Class in his buttonhole.
