This is a very elaborate 1914 Iron Cross 1st Class award document that has been period-framed. The recipient’s last name was Röhl. I am a bit surprised to see a document of such good quality and size issued on 31 July 1917. Documents like this are more often seen earlier in the war. At the time of the award, Röhl was assigned to Kompagnie Nr 8 of Reserve Ersatz Regiment Nr 3. It is important to know that the document was printed specifically for this regiment. It was not a “fill-in-the blanks award” except for the recipient’s name and the award’s date. At the document’s top is a Hohenzollern Eagle in flight with an Iron Cross in his talons. The document’s bottom displays the unit’s stamp and regimental commander Oberstleutnant von Below’s signature. The document within the frame measures 18 1/2″ x 11 1/2.” The brown period frame has a most interesting design and measures 18 1/2″ x 14 1/2.” A hanger at the document’s top allows you to hang this most entertaining document on YOUR wall.
