This is a wonderful framed photograph that shows a group of enlisted sailors (thirteen men) standing and kneeling with rifles. They are part of a Matrosen-Division. Two petty officers are also among the group on the back row. The photo is dated 1910, and was taken at Wilhelmshaven. On the reverse, August Kläfkr, one of the men’s names, is penciled in. He was born in 1887 and assigned to 1. Kompagnie II. Matrosen-Division (though not at birth[!]). He also noted that from 1910-1912 he served in East Asia (Ostasien) aboard the S. M. Torpedoboot S90. The photo measures 6 1/2” x 9.” The period brown frame measures 11” x 14 1/2.” A very good chance exists that he served during WW I.
