But in the early days of WW II he was promoted to Generalmajor and was on Hitler’s staff.

Rommel gained quick promotion and became and eventually was promoted to Generalfeldmarschall and gained fame in Afrika with the “Afrika Korps.” With the fall of Africa he was moved and became involved in the strengthening “Festung Europa” against the anticipated Allied landing.

Unfortunately for the Germans guessed wrong as to where the landing would occur. At the same time Rommel would become involved in the “20 July 1944″ plot against Hitler. There had been several attempts to assassinate Hitler but this attempt came the closest to doing the deed. The post attempt came with grim consequences as nearly 5,000 people were executed.
