GERMANY – GOBLET – KÄPITAN ZUR SEE OSWALD VON STUDNITZ
Brilliant and striking presentation goblet for Käpitan zur See Oswald von Studnitz (1871-1963). This officer lead a very distinguished Naval career which extended into WW I. The goblet was presented to Käpitan zur See Oswald von Studnitz in April 1914.
Engraved at the top it reads twenty five years of Naval service. The goblet was presented to him by the Deck Officer’s Mess of the S.M.S. München. This ship was a Kleiner Kreuzer (Light Cruiser) and was a part of the Bremen class of light cruisers. During WW I she served at the Battle of Jutland and other actions. At the time that he was presented this goblet in 1914 he was newly promoted to Käpitan zur See. However he had been transferred to a command a Torpedoboot squadron in February 1915. He retired in 1915.
Among his decorations were the Hohenzollern House Order Knights Cross with Swords, The Order of the Red Eagle with Swords 3rd Class, and the 1914 Iron Cross 2nd Class. He also received a Knighthood of the Order of St. John and the Ottoman Order of the Medjidjie. This research comes from his Great Grandson Gilbert von Studnitz.
Aside from the information engraved on this lovely goblet we see a rope like band near the bottom. There are not any manufacturer hallmarks on the goblet nor hallmarking for silver content.
The goblet is quite large and makes for an impressive and historical display.
