GERMANY – SANKE CARD – FLIERGERHAUPTMANN OSWALD BOELCKE – NR 409
Oswald Boelcke was an important ace with forty confirmed victories. He along with Max Immelmann were the first aces who were awarded the Orden Pour le Mérite when they had achieved eight victories in January 1916.
Boelcke would go on to create the first hunting squadron which was equipped with single seater biplanes as opposed to the earlier Fokker Eindecker.
Among the first of Boelcke’s cubs was Manfred von Richthofen who showed great promise even then. Boelcke was killed in October 1916 when he collided with another pilot from Jasta 2. After Boelcke’s death, Jasta 2 was renamed Jasta Boelcke, the only Jasta to be named for a pilot.
This is Sanke card Nr 409 and is the scarcest of the Sanke cards of Oswald Boelcke. It is a death card of him. After his name there is a cross which indicates that he is deceased. The card also has a poem which is dedicated to him.
The postcard is in excellent condition and has never been mailed.
