GERMANY – SANKE CARD – LEUTNANT KARL-EMIL SCHÄFER – NR 507
Karl-Emil Schäfer (1891-1917) was initially a One Year Volunteer in a Prussian Jäger-Bataillone. He was later seriously wounded and was promoted to Leutnant. He then transferred to the Air Service and joined Jasta 11. He was one of the leading pilots there shooting down fifteen enemy aircraft during “Bloody April” 1917 (He was also one of the Jasta’s pranksters and jokester along with Kurt Wolff.). He was then posted to Jasta 28 as its C.O. At the time of his death later in 1917 he had a total of thirty conformed victories.
This Sanke card Nr 507 shows him from the chest up wearing a visor cap. In his second buttonhole we see the ribbon of the 1914 Iron Cross and one for the Bavarian equivalent. This was taken before his award of the Orden Pour le Mérite.
This postcard is in excellent condition and has never been mailed.
