GERMANY – STICKPIN – NAVY SILVER WOUND BADGE

This is a silver Navy wound badge stickpin. The Navy wound badge was authorized during the Summer of 1918 whereas the army version was authorized in March 1918.

Each of the service’s wound badges were authorized in three different grades. Black being the 3rd class, silver being 2nd class, and gold was 1st class. The number and types of wounds determined what class was to be awarded. As they were authorized so late in the war, it was not uncommon to see them still being awarded in the 1930’s. It should also be noted that Navy wound badges were awarded in much lower numbers than Army wound badges. Smaller number of men in the naval service and fewer opportunities to be wounded than front line troops.
