Description
This is one of the more ornate veteran’s badges I have encountered. Part of what makes it so unusual is that it has been produced in TWO pieces. The top piece is a cutout, gilt-toned Wittelsbach Crown. The badge’s lower half is a detailed, ornate shield. Mounted on the shield is a rampant Bavarian Lion in high-relief, holding a smaller shield with the Bavarian Flag’s checkerboard design. Mounted on that is a gilt “1.” Below the shield are two bandeaux, which refer to Infanterie-Regiment König Nr 1. The regiment was one of the Bavarian Army’s most elite. The badge’s reverse reveals that a substantial pin was attached to the crown. A small place appears below the crown where the pin could be centered. The badge measures an impressive 1 1/2″ x 1 1/4.”
