IMPERIAL GERMANY – GOBLET – KAISERLICHE MARINE / IMPERIAL GERMAN NAVY

This is an incredibly beautiful crystal wine goblet for a German Naval vessel.

There is a very handsome HAND painted scene in the front which shows a two smoke stack vessel steaming on a green sea. Above that we see a Kriegsflagge and flanking that we see (Volldampf voraus) “Full Speed Ahead. Below the ship we see neatly painted “Kiel.” Kiel was the fleet headquarters for the North Sea (Nord See) Fleet which was headquartered in Wilhelmshaven. This was the principal and most important German Naval port as opposed to the port on the Baltic. This was seen during WW I where under Prinz Heinrich, the Baltic received fewer and better ships than the port at Wilhelmshaven. The front line battleships were there and that was the fleet that fought the British at the Battle of Jutland.

There is a neat gold rim around the lip of the goblet. It is partially diminished from use. There is also etched into the reverse of the goblet the volume of the goblet which is “5/20L.” There are tiny bubbles around the goblet which speak to the fact that it is indeed crystal. A fine Naval artifact.
