Description
The battleship S. M. S. Mecklenburg was the last of the battleships launched before a new design was introduced in 1909. Heavier artillery was added, along with more armor. The Wittelsbach Class (of which the S. M. S. Mecklenburg was a part) however, still was a solid design. When WW I started, the S. M. S. Mecklenburg patrolled the coastal waters of Germany. Later, she was reduced to housing POW’s, a boring fate for both German and Allied sailors. This postcard shows her at rest in a channel, where she is taking on supplies from tenders. Information about her technical specs was penned in black ink where the stamp normally was placed. It was never mailed.
