U.S. – BOOK – MICKEY MOUSE BOOK: MICKEY SAILS TO TREASURE ISLAND

Original price was: $95.00.Current price is: $80.75.

Here is a Special Blast From the Past! Mickey Mouse is a worldwide icon and the “face” of the Walt Disney Company, Inc. International sensation Mickey first emerged in 1928’s famous cartoon “Steamboat Willie.” He went on to appear in a cartoon strip series and has appeared in countless cartoons and movies.

During the 1930’s, Whitman (a division of the Western Publishing Company) developed an inexpensive paperback book series for children, the Big Little Books® (BLB’s). The Walt Disney Studio was the first company to license their comic characters with Whitman for inclusion in the BLB’s. In 1935, the book series included this thrilling tale about Mickey Mouse and his adventure sailing to Treasure Island. The vintage book has Mickey walking the plank and being grabbed by a gorilla. Keeping with the BLB’s commitment to printing bulky but small paperbacks that could be easily handled and read by young children, Mickey Sails to Treasure Island measures 3 ½” x 4 ½” x 5/8,” and consists of 192 pages. Several illustrations are included that will be sure to bring back fond childhood memories of the famous mouse. [Please note that this book was published a mere seven years after Mickey first burst on the screen].

Interestingly, the BLB’s were given away as premiums distributed by stores, gas stations, food products, and radio programs. Our find was sponsored by Kolynos dental cream. Kolynos was created in 1908 and sponsored several well-known radio programs and book series during the Depression era. Kolynos was purchased by Colgate in 1995. [BLB information source: 2012 Educational Research and Applications Corp. on the www].
While this book is not German or from the Imperial Period, it is a lot of fun! Hurrah for Mickey Mouse, America’s ambassador to the world. This delightful little gem is fun to read and remains in very good condition, with no missing pages. The binding is intact but loose.
