Description

This is a most unusual over-sized table medal of Duke Carl Eduard from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (1884-1954). He was a grandson of Queen Victoria, as well as a royal in the British monarchy. During WW I, he was denied this position. Later, after he abdicated his throne (along with all German royals), he joined the Nazi Party in 1935. He became a high-ranking official in the SA and also served as the German Red Cross’s president from 1933 through 1945. After WW II, he was jailed for his political sympathies.

The oval-shaped table medal measures 4 5/8″ x 3 3/4.” It features a high-relief profile of Carl Eduard. Around his profile we read “Carl Eduard Herzog von Sachsen – Coburg – Gotha.” Under his profile is the artist who created the design’s signature, “B. Bleeker” and the date, 1937. Nothing appears on the reverse. The case measures 6″ x 6″ x 7/8″ and is a light-brown. Inside the case is a light-blue-gray silk liner on its top half. The identically-colored bottom half is fitted to the table medal. With the lid open, one has a very attractive presentation, which is what table medals are all about!
