Description
This is a fine pair of hauptmann’s epaulettes from 1. Westfälisches Pionier-Bataillon Nr 7. The unit was founded in 1816. It was garrisoned at Koln (Cologne), where it was attached to the VII. Armeekorps. The obverse’s felt surface is red, with a gilt Nr 7 and twin gilt pips indicating a hauptmann’s rank. The metal frame, “crescent moon,” is a highly tarnished silver. [I just love the patina, which has not been cleaned in decades. I strongly urge the new owner to leave these as they are and to resist the urge to polish them]! The epaulettes’ reverse is also covered in red felt. We see four moth nips on each epaulette. The epaulettes are housed in their original storage box, which is always a plus. In the box we find the original tissue paper, which helped to preserve them for more than one-hundred-years. The one other small fault we find is that the storage box’s lid has separated.
