This is the most magnificent bracelet we have ever offered to you. It comes from the Kingdom of Hannover or its vassal state, the Duchy of Braunschweig, and dates from 1859. This was a full seven years before the 1866 Austro-Prussian War wherein Hannover was annexed by Prussia. The massive and elegant bracelet is made of silver and richly-applied, two-color cloisonné.
If we run a tape measure around the bracelet, it measures 8 3/4″ in diameter. At its widest point, it measures 1 1/2.” The bracelet’s surface is covered in ravishing black cloisonné enamel, inset with contrasting gold laurel leaves. The latter appear on the right and left halves of the bracelet. In the bracelet’s center is an oval-shaped compartment that opens to reveal a photograph. The compartment’s outer lid features a gold-crowned royal cypher. It was presented on a 50th anniversary, which I suspect was a golden wedding anniversary. Directly below the cypher is the date “31 Juli 1809-1859.” As we open the center compartment, we see a photograph of a stern-looking elderly man, who is probably in his 60’s or 70’s.
The compartment lifts out from the bracelet, which allows the photo to be displayed in its housing. The bracelet breaks open to allow it to be more easily slipped onto the wrist. Around the bracelet’s edges, where the halves connect, is a fancy trim that may be made of GOLD (although of a lower fineness, perhaps 14K or even 10K). When the bracelet comes open, a delicate chain holds the two hinged pieces together. I cannot even begin to adequately describe the beauty and luxuriousness of this bracelet.
