This is an unusual square and gilt-toned patriotic medal. The obverse shows a profile of Kaiser Wilhelm II. Wilhelm II is framed inside a wreath with a Hohenzollern Crown at the top and a Hohenzollern Eagle at the bottom. On the reverse we see mention of his 31st birthday, which was 27 January 1889. At that time he had been Kaiser less than one year, having seen both his grandfather and father die in 1888, then having assumed the throne after their deaths.
