Description
The petschaft played an important part among an Imperial German’s desk accessories. When used with melted wax, it sealed an envelope’s flap and imprinted the seal with the sender’s Coat-of-Arms (if noble or royal) or his initials. Today’s petschaft has been fashioned out of a non magnetic black metal into a chest-high Kaiser Wilhelm II bust. Standing three inches tall, it features the Kaiser in military uniform. Ordinarily, a vertical piece extended down from the chest, with its base serving as the device’s seal. This particular petschaft, however, never was fitted with a seal; it remains blank. Instead, it serves as an attractive little Kaiser-themed desk decoration.
