This postcard shows King Ludwig II of Bavaria (1845-1846. Ludwig II is often referred to as “Mad Ludwig.” Whether he was mad or not, he was a tortured soul who served as Bavaria’s King from 1864-1886. He was deposed in 1886, then found drowned in a lake with his doctor the next day. During his reign, Ludwig II was best-known for the castles he built, (and which many thought brought his kingdom to the edge of bankruptcy). This pose shows Ludwig II in military uniform, complete with orders and decorations.
