This postcard shows Maximilian, Emperor of Mexico (1832-1867). He actually was Austrian, but was set upon Mexico’s throne with Napoleon III’s blessing. His rule was not a happy one. He was executed by Mexican patriots who did not want a European sitting on their country’s throne. He appears to be wearing a civilian suit with a neck order. The postcard was not mailed.
