This is a postcard featuring Prinz Luitpold of Bavaria 1821-1912 and his family. The postcard is dated 1860, and is taken from a painting. At this time, Ludwig II (Mad Ludwig) was Bavaria’s King. He remained on the throne until 1886, when he drowned (or was helped to drown) under mysterious circumstances. His brother, the next-in-line for the throne, was deemed to be insane. Therefore, Prinz Luitpold became the Prinz Regent and governed Bavaria until his death in 1912. Luitpold appears here with his wife and four children. The postcard was not mailed.
