POSTCARD OF S. M. S. GRILLE

This is a postcard of the S. M. S. Grille. She was considered an aviso (dispatch-boat) that was French built in 1857. She was used as a royal yacht in the 1860’s. She even saw action against the French in the 1870/71 Franco-Prussian War. She was originally built as a three masted schooner with steam power as well. Later she was modernized and one of her three masts was removed. She was used in a number of roles, although none were active during WW I. When she was dismantled during 1920 in Hamburg, she was the German Navy’s oldest ship. The postcard shows the Grille in profile at anchor. It depicts her in a later incarnation with one of her masts removed. The postcard has never been used.
