PRUSSIA – DOCUMENT GROUPING – GUSTAV ULRICH – OFFICER PROMOTION PATENTS – FOR A NAVAL ENGINEER OFFICER – GUSTAV ULRICH

Promotion patents are highly prized by collectors. Naval promotion patents are even more highly prized as there so many fewer of them compared to the army.

There are in fact two classes of promotion patents. Those for officers generally of the rank of hauptmann or higher which were signed by the Kaiser or King and those of junior officers which were identical as they were prepared by the same scribes and in the same format but were not signed.

Today we offer a pair of promotion patens for a Navy engineering officer. The name of the officer was Gustav Ulrich. Ulrich rose the rank of Fregattenkapitän (a.D.) And apparently dies in 1936. The documents are noted below:

  1. Document number one is for the rank of Marine Ingenieur. The document is dated 7 November 1902. Interestingly it was prepared aboard the royal yacht S.M.Y. Hohenzollern. Perhaps the Kaiser was aboard and a lot of documents were prepared even though he did not sign this one.

Two of the four pages are used. There is a large embossed Imperial Eagle on the obverse and reverse. It is quite spectacular. Also included is a typewritten summary (In German but much easier to read than what is said on the document.) of what the document says.

  1. Document number two is also for the rank of Marine Ingenieur. I find this a bit confusing as it is apparently for the same rank and it is for the same man. The document is dated 11October 1906. The document was prepared at one of the Kaiser’s Berlin castles although which one was not specified.

A fine pair and bargain priced.
