PRUSSIA – DOCUMENT GROUPING – OFFICER PROMOTION PATENTS – ONE OF WHICH WAS SIGNED BY KING WILHELM I – ROBERT WISCHER.

Promotion patents are highly prized by collectors. Early examples from the reign of Friedrich Wilhelm IV and Wilhelm I were the Kings of Prussia are quite uncommon and especially prized.

There are in fact two classes of promotion patents. Those for officers generally of the rank of hauptmann or higher which were signed by the Kaiser or King and those of junior officers which were identical as they were prepared by the same scribes and in the same format but were not signed.

Today we offer a pair of promotion patents for an officer one is signed by Friedrich Wilhelm IV and the other signed by King Wilhelm I. The documents are noted below:

  1. Robert Wisher was an officer in the Prussian army. This document was a promotion from Premiere Lieutenant to Hauptmann. It is signed and dated by King Friedrich Wilhelm IV on 16 February 1856. The document was signed in Berlin. Three of the four pages are used. There is a large embossed Imperial Eagle on the third page where Friedrich Wilhelm IV has signed. It is quite spectacular.

Also included is a typewritten summary (In German but much easier to read than what is said on the document.).

  1. This is a promotion patent for Robert Wischer from the rank of Hauptmann to Major. It is signed on 12 September 1865 at Schloß Babelsberg. Three of the four pages are used. There is a large embossed Imperial Eagle on the third page where Wilhelm I has signed.

It is quite spectacular. Also included is a typewritten summary (In German but much easier to read than what is said on the document.).

3.There is a third document which I believe is essentially a bank deposit. It is in the amount of three hundred thalers (Then the monetary denomination in use instead of Marks.)

There six pages and three pages are used. Also included is a typewritten summary (In German but much easier to read than what is said on the document.). The document dates from the 1860’s.

There is additional information that shows that Wischer achieved the rank of Generalmajor by 1877. He was an engineering officer. A fine trio of early signed documents two of which are signed by King Friedrich Wilhelm IV and Wilhelm I and bargain priced.
