Description
At WW I’s outbreak, the Battleship S. M. S. Markgraf was one of the German Navy’s most powerful, along with her three sister ships in the König Battleship Class. She was commissioned in October 1914. All four ships within the König Battleship Class were assigned to the 3rd Battleship Squadron. The squadron fought at the Battle of Jutland (Skagerrakschlacht to the Germans) from 31 May through 1 June 1916. She took five hits during the battle. After WW I’s end, she (along with all newer German battleships and battle cruisers), was supposed to be surrendered to the British. Instead, the German crews scuttled them all at Scapa Flow in 1919. The postcard shows the ship in profile under steam. It was never mailed.
