PRUSSIA – PATRIOTIC PENDANT – SILVER COIN
This is a marvelous combination of a Prussian silver coin for then König (and future Kaiser) Wilhelm I with a bezel that allowed a lucky lady to wear it as a pendant on a chain around her neck. The bezel is quite heavy and wide. It measures 1 1/4″ in diameter. The bail (connects the pendant to a necklace) is marked .800 silver. This means it was produced after 1885, when the silver marking standard was changed by an aging Kaiser Wilhelm I. The coin, however, is dated 1866 (Prussia’s big year, when she and her allies made short work of Austria, etc. in the Austro-Prussian War: a good warm-up for the 1870-1871 Franco Prussian War). It shows the Prussian king in profile on the obverse, surrounded by the words “Wilhelm Koenig von Preussen.” The coin’s reverse features the Hohenzollern Eagle and these words around its edge “Ein Vereins Thaler XXX Ein Pfund Fein” (An Association Dollar Thirty a Pound Fine). A small capital “A” is evident just beneath Wilhelm’s profile on the obverse. It is probably an indication which artist designed this special coin for whatever association benefited by its sale.
