Hohenzollern was a small principality within Germany as well as a royal house of the Kingdom of Prussia and the family from which Wilhelm II came. Interestingly, a line of decorations from both Prussia and Hohenzollern had some very similar visual features. The state of Hohenzollern was very small. Its military contributions were limited in numbers. What we offer today is a veteran’s badge from Hohenzollern. While I have seen veteran’s material from virtually every other state in Imperial Germany, this is the very first that I have seen from Hohenzollern. It consists of a gilt cross with a three-color enamel center. The center of the device has the simple coat of arms of Hohenzollern, which is essentially a black and white quartered shield. Extending around the shield in a circular fashion is “Hohenzollern Scher Kriegerbund.” Suspended from a loop at the top of the cross is a small triangular shaped piece of ribbon. Within that a safety pin is mounted to attach the badge to a garment. It is very handsome and in excellent condition. If you enjoy collecting veteran’s badges, this is one that will not come around every day.
